When regular people purchase a home, they do so with the intention of living in it for years. But Ellen DeGeneres is not like the rest of us.
The comedian has built a reputation for being Hollywood’s most active house flipper having bought and sold around 12 homes over the years. Some sources even estimate that she currently owns an estimated $100 million worth of real estate properties.
A Taste for Beautiful Houses
In an interview, the 62-year-old talk show host shared that she tends to get bored of a house’s style or aesthetic once she’s lived in it for a while. So, she doesn’t really mind looking for something else while also making money on her past homes.
Her current taste for beautiful and expensive houses stems from her childhood as her family could never afford to own a home. After spending her early years in apartments and dreaming about the homes she saw during open houses, DeGeneres could finally afford to have her own mansion… a few, actually.
First Purchases
One of the star’s first purchases is a $6 million Hollywood Hills home, which she bought in 2003. Her introduction to flipping proved to be a good one as she managed to sell the property for $9 million just three years later.
She also owned a home called ‘The Treehouse’, which she acquired in 2004. The midcentury home got its nickname thanks to the 2,000 square feet of outdoor living spaces.
Going Bigger
From there, DeGeneres’ real estate buys only became bigger and pricier. There’s the $15.75 million Montecito mansion she purchased in 2007.
Of course, her former Beverly Hills compound, which reportedly cost her $48 million, is also worth mentioning. The stunning property was the site of DeGeneres’ wedding to actress Portia De Rossi in 2008.
The same year she sold the compound to host Ryan Seacrest, the ‘Finding Dory’ star bought herself a $8.5 million horse ranch in Thousand Oaks, California. She and De Rossi lived in the property while they were renovating it.
Coveted Residence
Developing an eye for real estate properties, it’s no surprise that the comedian also got her hands on a couple of coveted and well-known residences.
One of these is the Skouras Residence, a home in Trousdale Estates designed by Harold Levitt, a famed architect. DeGeneres only owned the property for a year but made almost $3 million when she sold the midcentury home for $20 million.
